FTP attempt yields.......ftp: connect :Unknown error number

Hello everyone, I’m having a tough time with FTP and
need some help. I have this problem on XP Pro but not XP Home. I’ve
tried to upload a website from Dreamweaver to www.angelfire.com and
keep getting “ftp error occurred, cannot make connection to host”. I
tried other free hosting sites to no avail. I tried using other ftp
clients like filezilla, firefox plugins and ftp.exe and get the error
"ftp: connect :Unknown error number" . I used a couple of ftp test
websites to connect with angelfire and that was successful. I pinged
angelfire and that was successful. I added dreamweaver in the
firewall settings to allow pass-through as well as ftp.exe but no
success. I unchecked the passive FTP in tools/options in the
browser. I’m out of ideas….does anyone else have any? Thanks!

If you have firewalls and nat routers to traverse you will probably
have to recheck the passive ftp option.

Which firewall are you using? If it's not xp's own firewall, uninstall
it and watch the problem go away. Note that uninstalling the firewall
is required to check if it's misbehaving it is not adequate to merely
disable it.

Thanks for your help, Jim. I am using the XP firewall. Do you think
there would be any purpose served by disabling the windowns firewall
and using zonealarm instead?

I would stick with the xp firewall.

You can disable it to see if that allows the ftp to succeed. If it
does, you can then configure it to allow ftp connections whilst
enabled.

I think you need to Check the use of Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL..)
Under the Advanced Tab >> Browsing.
Use another FTP client like WiseFTP PuttyFTP,they are free..

Make sure the Info on the FTP is correct.

Open a run command and type in:
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot and try to FTP from windows Explorer window.

Assign Port 21 as trusted in the firewall.

Thanks for all your help, Jim and nass,
Since my last posting and before reading your last suggestion, Jim I
disconnected the xp firewall and dreamweaver and ftp works fine. I
installed Zonealarm and it still works fine. I disconnected Zonealarm
and turned the XP firewall back on and then implimented your Ideas,
nass. Unfortunately, no success. The only other question I have,
Jim, is how do I configure the XP firewall for dreamweaver and FTP?
And nass, I opened port 20 and 21 for TCP and UDP but my understanding
from reading literature is that FTP can use a variety of different
ports that don't have to be specified.

Hi Ben,
True that FTP can use dif Ports but the regular one port 21 and 20 it
depends on which one avaliable or used. You can add programs and Ports to the
Firewall eceptions but my advice to you use ZA as your Default Firewall
better than Windows Firewall for Outbounds and Inbounds Traffics and
Monitoring your system!

As Nass says, it's on the xp firewall exceptions tab.

Whether you stick with xp firewall or use zonealarm is really a matter
of personal choice. Some people view the outgoing notification to be
of significant value and worth the resource guzzling extra overhead on
your system. Others (like me) view the outgoing notification as not
worth much since any malware determined to defeat it can do so easily
and thus it might lead you into a false sense of security.

As far as the true operation as a firewall is concerned (ie.filtering
incoming packets) both the xp firewall and zonealarm do the job
adequately.

If you do opt to switch to zonealarm or another third party firewall,
be prepared to spend more time on problems like this one when it
starts misfiring. The xp firewall does its job well and rarely causes
grief.

This is all really intersting stuff. Thanks for the list of ports,
Nass, I always wondered what they all were about and how they were
organized. I get frustrated sometimes when trying to troubleshoot the
computer because the inner-workings are so mysterious and seem to be
poorly documented anywhere. I assume that for propietary reasons,
software manufacturers don't want you to know what's inside their
operating systems. I should look more into Linux and other open-
source software, perhaps then I can truly see the inner workings of a
program although I've tried to decompile things and the result is
still incomprehensible. I think for now I'll use the windows firewall
when not actively designing web pages and then use ZA when I get into
the site development mode. Thanks again, guys and take care.
