Java patches: Very Inefficient: Please Advise

Hi;
I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP 95 and SP3 running. I also
run Secunia PSI. These latter informed me that Java had a lot of
insecurities and i was diriected by them to updating Java patches.
Boy Hoowdy. that was a trip and something more again! What happened
was two things:
(1) when i downloaded a patch, it ended up with a logo on my
homescreen. When i clicked there, it started to download again, as if
I had not downloaded before;
(2) the downloads were Slow Big Time, taking hours to complete
about four downloads--like I was downloading Windows or something.
QUESTION: Is there a utility i can use to download all kinds of
updates, as an unattended batch? (EG, maybe, download x and also y
and also z patch from Java or Microsoft, totally without needing me
to say: i agree to the contract, yes, run the program, etc.). Is it
from Microsoft, where can i get it? Is there a key stroke that i can
use to make my Windows xp 95 SP1 do it all unattended? Please:
Advise.

I also have Sun Java Platform Standard Edition 6 (v1.6.0_03-b05) and use
the Secunia online Software Inspector, which has over time, found a few
programs that needed updates--and the updates ran just fine. Thank you,

Like you, starting about a week ago, Secunia ha's pointed out that my Java
is out of date. Oddly, it directs me to a different web site than the one I
used originally to get Java on my PC. I was hesitant to install the update
from this site (and from what you say, maybe I was right). Instead, I went
to my Java Control Panel (Start/Control Panel/Java/Update/Update Now) and
find that it says "You already have the latest Java(TM) Platform on this
system." I wonder in this case if Secunia is in error. For updating Java,
I'll always let Java decide if I need an update rather than Secunia. I'll
let Secunia tell me if something's out of date, but if possible, I'll let
the various program's Update Feature (as in Adobe Reader, Quicktime, etc.,
etc.) check for and install updates. I'll use Secunia to help me with an
update only when software doesn't have a built-in Updater (as may be the
case with Flash Players, etc.)

I'll monitor this thread now and see if anyone else with more knowledge
has suggestions for you. Good luck.

For what it's worth, the several times Java has had me update to a revised
version, it's been a download in the neighborhood of 100 MB, which is a
good-sized update but not nearly what you've found.

Hi Craig;
A+ for acurate information which helps! I did just as you
sugggested and got into the Java files and found that there was an
update link with an inspector available: "would you like to see if you
are up to date?". Primo, I am still learning about XP 95, and this
will save me from confusion. Simple, when Secunia tells me to update,
i will ask Java to look into the subject for me. Best of all worlds,

Here is a question about Java: while i was cooling my heels doing
the Java wait-for-me-to piddle-around-update from the suspect site, I
got loaded with Netbeans somehow. Boy howdy, what is that for? Can i
just delete and be safe? Or is it one of those things which makes
Java run, a prerequisite? Please Advise.
