Server Time Out
Hi,

Please help if you can. It will just take a few minutes. I'm trying to find
out if the servers for Microsoft.Public Newsgroups is timing out the
Connection to their servers by visitors to these newsgroups, or if this is a
problem with my computer and setup. What happens is, if I have a period of
inactivity while reading the messages for say, 90 seconds or a little more, I
am then unable to open a new message for another 2 minutes or more. After
which, a info message tells me that my "TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly
terminated by the Server" or "Message could not be Displayed". "Outlook
Express encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Check
your Computer for Low Memory or Low Disk Space". I have plenty of both. Once
either of these two messages are displayed, I can again access/open new
message bodies as before. If anyone else has noticed this behavior with their
Computers, while in the newsgroups, please add a note to this thread saying
so. Info: Although I cannot open any new messages, previously read message
bodies can still be opened. Thanks to all.

No, it's you. As Mr. Hagen has suggested, this sort of problem is most often
caused by McAfee or Norton security software. If you have security programs
installed from either company, it is recommended that you uninstall them
and use something better. I recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast if you
want a free one. The Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

If you don't have McAfee or Norton products installed, try turning off email
scanning in your antivirus program. This email scanning doesn't provide any
extra protection and very often causes time-out problems.

Re: Server Time Out
Not intentionally, however I am using a McAfee security suite provided free by
my ISP, Comcast Cable. The advisor may be bundled with it. I'll check and if
it is there I'll try disabling site advisor, to see if the problem goes away.
Thanks.

Re: Server Time Out
Hi,
I do have McAfee security suite installed that was provided free from my
ISP. I'll check to see if Site Advisor is activated by default. I have
disabled E-Mail scanning. Using your computer in the newsgroups you
don't get any "Time Outs" when returning from getting coffee or pop?
Thanks for the help - Yeah, I know you don't use OE.

No, I don't use OE (or Windows) to access newsgroups although Comcast is my
ISP and I'm not seeing any problems with my service. If the problem only
occurs in newsgroups, are you using the Microsoft news server (and not
Comcast's)? The MS news server is msnews.microsoft.com.

If the problem continues when using the MS news server, you might want to
install another newsreader and see if the slowness is OE-related or more
global.

Hi,

For those who might have this happen in the future I'll give the
satisfactory workaround that I found for my problem. Waiting for 90 to
120 seconds for the message to download when you select a header may not
sound like much but it can be a definite annoyance. Anyway, I un-ticked
"automatically download messages when viewing in preview pane", under
Internet Options >Read and this functionallity was added. If I select a
previously read message it immediately displays, when I select an unread
message after a period of inactivity or any other time, I immediately
get an info page stating the message has not downloaded with options to
"click here or press space bar". Either makes the message immediately
display. All in all a 2 second operation. Thanks to the group for all
pointers that you gave.

RE: Server Time Out
I would suggest to WMB that he not get to excited when he can not properly
access this website:

Sometimes it just don't work. I made a post on January 30 and have been
unable to reply to my own post or repost since that date. Links this site
puts on my e-mail result in "Page can not be displayed" etc.

Today for the first time, I was able to reply to your post, but still can't
reply to my own. Links on my e-mail still don't work but this site seems to
be getting well and may fully recover itself in a day or two.

There is nothing wrong with my computer, and may not have been anything
wrong with yours, so don't waste a lot of your time looking for problems with
your rig when this website don't work.

Give this site a few days and it usually cures it's self of whatever causes
it not to work.

WMB is posting through a newsreader. You're posting through the Web
