Lavasoft ad-aware se

When I try to remove the program thru cotrol panel / Add or remove
programs, I get the message "Could not open INSTALL.LOG file." When I try
to re-install the program I get the same message. Any ideas?

That can be a bit messy
as the application will have to be deleted manually
*and* the registry keys deleted manually


My guess is that you want to do that as the auto-update no longer is
supported
and you are going to try to install Lavasoft-2007

If my guess is right...
the only good news I have is that Lavasoft is still providing updated
definitions for Ad-awareSE
but you have to go to their website manually update.
simple download the file
and unzip to your adaware folder

When I try to install the latest definitions I get the message " Error
retrieving updates."

Ad-Aware SE is no longer being updated.
Ad-Aware 2007 is.

You need to remove the old, install the latest and then you can continue
using the freeware version of LavaSoft Ad-Aware.

Just to add to what Shenan has said,try installing ad-aware 2007 the
install process will see that SE is installed and will remove it
automatically.
Who knows it might be a workaround for your SE troubles.
