Usuer Account

I have just set up a user account for my wife. I am using Windows XP Home
Edition SP2. This was done yesterday and everything worked absolutely fine.

Today when logging on, a log on dialogue box appeared saying "The security
log on this system is full. Only adminstrators can log on to fix this"

Okay, I'm the administrator but how do I fix this?

Anyone help at all?

I don't know whether Home edition has this. Right-Click on My Computer and
choose "Manage". In the L/H pane under System Tools, expand Event Viewer.
Right-Click on Security, and then you can either clear it, or select
properties and edit the size.

Set the Event Log to "Overwrite events as needed".

"The security log on this system is full" message when you try to log on

That kb article specifically says XP Pro.....no mention of whether it
applies to Home Edition...

I don't have a Windows XP Home machine to verify but the Administrative
Tools folder only contains shortcuts to various items. If the folder
isn't there the Event Viewer can be accessed by entering the following
in the "Run" box:

eventvwr.msc

or the fully qualified path:

%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc

In any case, as you said in your other post, the user only needs to get
to the Event Viewer by some means or other and change the log size
settings. It is usually best to set logs to Overwrite events as needed.

Interestingly the default in Pro appears to be "Overwrite events older than
7 days" - so if that is the default setting, then the OP needs to look at
the log first I would suggest!

That "Overwrite events older than 7 days" would probably be fine for
most any users. Personally I might want to keep the logs for a bit
longer than 7 days, at times it can make it easier to see when a problem
started and what other errors might have been present before or when
problems started. I think that the point is to not simply set a size
and not have any overwrite option present, if the log fills up it can
just create problems for nothing.

Home does have administrative tools but you can disable them. You can still
then access them through Gordons first response.
