Allways get [1] when file saved
Weh I go to save a pdf file it allways afixes (is that a word?) the [1] to
the file name. Is this a problem with the Adbee Reader or with the XP setup.
Not sure if this was the best newsgroup to use but if not please advise a
better one. I am now getting fed up with getting rid of the [1] when I wish
to save the file
Happy Christmas to everyone.

Re: Allways get [1] when file saved
Sometimes a suffix will be added if the file name you are using already
exists in the location where you want to save the file.

Yes, but it's spelled "affixes."

You mean "Adobe"?

It's Windows XP that's doing it, but it's not a problem. It's doing it
because there is already a file in that folder with that name. It adds
the [1] to distinguish it from that existing file.

Leave the [1] there and save another file with that name, and it will
add a [2] this name. And so on.

Re: Allways get [1] when file saved
It happens because Adobe Reader is using Web cache protocols for naming files (look
in the Temp Internet Files folder and you will see many [1]s, [2]s and [3]s)
I suspect it does this because of it's capability as a web-browser plug-in.
This is not the same as when a file of the same name is already present, Win's answer
to this is to append ~1 and subsequent consecutive numbers thereon.
The answer might be to use the "File" > "Save As..." option from the file menus
rather than the "Save" button.
In this way you could edit the name before saving.

Re: Allways get [1] when file saved
Slight error on my part (someone is bound to point out).
Appending files with ~1(and so on) is DOS filename naming convention, where two 8.3
"style" names conflict - which is not exactly the same thing.
Windows, however, will by default ALWAYS ask you - informing you that "a file of the
same name exists" and "do you want to overwrite?"
The only time I know of when it doesn't is when you copy and paste a file into the
same directory, in which case you get :
Copy of Filename.ext
Copy (2) of Filename.ext
Copy (3) of Filename.ext.....etc,
No other application running under Windows saves files and duplicates as [1] [2] [3]
etc, apart from your Adobe Reader (when saving .pdf files) and Internet Explorer
(when saving files and attachments).

Re: Allways get [1] when file saved
This [1] gets appended and yet there is no other file there with the same
name; it can be unique but still gets added. Surely this is not right.

It may be, though it does not appear to be an XP problem.
What browser and what version?

1. Is it a browser you are saving from?
2. Any file, or just one particular filename?
3. Have you got explorer set to show hidden files?

You may do better asking the OP your questions instead of me.

My questions were, of course, intended for the person with the problem.
If that's you (by which I mean TPWTP, not Alan), what are the answers,
as they may help the rest of us sort out the problem.
