Internet Explorer 6 and 7

I am posting this here because I cannot seem to find the correct board.

How is this for a tale of woe! I have spent hours and hours installing and
uninstalling IE 6 and IE7 on my Win XP as advised by my ISP provider and my
computer mfr Hardware and Software Depts.



My DSL ISP told me it was an IE7 problem that was slowing down my computer.
I went back to IE6 and forgot about all this then I reinstalled IE7 again
and it worked fine for a long time then my computer started running very
slow and then a tech from my computer mfr. Hdwe. Dept told me IE7 is really
for Vista and after awhile it slows down the system. See last paragraph in
this post.



At this point I went back to IE6 but the computer was still very slow. My
DSL ISP checked my line for 4 days and finally a tech told me it was my
modem. He was going to send me a new one but at the time I had already
decided to switch to cable so I then had a cable connection to the Internet
and a cable modem and IE6. (Note the computer mfr Hdwe. Tech changed my
options so that I would be notified before I installed Windows Updates so I
could do a custom setting and not select any IE7 installs.



At this point I was having trouble with a page not displaying properly. I
called my cable company and they told me it was a fault of my
computer-either plug-ins or security settings. I called my computer mfr.
software support dept. and I explained the page problem. -too far to the
left with no way to move it further right. The computer mfr. tech asked me
if I had SP3. At this point I suppose I still had SP3 but IE6 and it was my
understanding that there was no way to remove the SP3 so he reinstalled the
IE7 and this seems to have corrected the page that would not display
properly. Seems he never came across this problem before. Now I am
wondering how long it will be before IE7 slows things down again. Once
again I guess I should switch to automatic download and install since I now
have IE7 and I won't get anymore messages from one of my browsers about
optimization meaning change to automatic.



IE7 by the way is awful when it comes to getting pages to print with larger
print. I realize the lines do not get cut off like they sometimes do with
IE6. Pasting everything into word to rearrange the lines and print larger
is a headache as is trying to change the print options in the preview menu.
Any suggestions?

Update tell me there was a newer version of IE when I had IE6 on a Windows
XP computer if IE7 is not for Windows XP.

Maybe you'd want to try an alternate browser such as Firefox3

There is no problem with IE7 slowing down a computer.
How often do you run disk cleanup? How often do you run defrag? What virus
programs are you running?

I'm not so sure about that.
I run regular disk cleanups, scan disk and defrag (at least once a month) I
have the best McAfee program plus Spysweeper.

I was recently on the phone with Microsoft support, and one suggestion to
speed me up was to uninstall IE7 and go back to IE6, which I did.
Improvement. I have XPhome and SP3.

It is really _not_ necessary to quote, requote
and rerequote every damned line of everything
in order to make a response of a few lines.

What _is_ necessary, for the general good, is
to pare down the post to which you are
responding to those lines to which you _are_
responding. Usually, not many.

Thanks for the hint -- and no thanks for the manner of your response. This
is a recurring theme on usergroup threads -- sarcasm and general smugness.
If you do know everything, how nice for you. For those of us dumbheads who
cause you to sigh and shake your head, maybe just stick to a sincerely
offered suggestion.

The techs that told you that should go to school. Ask them HOW does IE7 slow
down a computer.
IE7 is/has been installed on millions of systems with no problems.
Try shutting down McAfee and Spysweeper for a while when your system runs
slow.
Run disk cleanup when the system is slow to see if it has an effect.
Please post back results.

I have XP home and SP3 also. Never have a slow problem.
I guess that is one way to satisfy you (tell you to go back to IE6)
What virus programs do you run?
