restore icon

In the beginning I unchecked "My Pictures" so it wouldn't show on the
desktop. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I did that. Would
some kind soul please remind me where that is so I can undo it? TIA

Create a shortcut to the folder; right-click the folder, hover over
"Send To", click "Desktop (create shortcut)".

By default there isn't an option for My Pictures on the Desktop. On the
Start Menu, yes.

Thanks, Kelly.... but it's not there. I simply do *not* remember how
I made it disappear, but I did it on purpose. Can you give me a path
to it or better yet, take an educated guess at where I unchecked it so
that I can recheck it?

You can use Send To Desktop/Create shortcut. As I stated, this is not a
native folder for the desktop. The start menu, yes.
