Windows update
I tried to use Windows update last night (14 hours ago) and although I got
to downloading an update the computer went into a booting up loop (I had to
do a restore to last known good boot to get the computer going again).
Since then I have variously been able to get into updates - with the same
consequence and, more often, the error message "The website has encountered
a problem".

If, as I assume, I'm not alone with this problem Microsoft seems to have a
major problem (and it's Patch Tuesday today!).

Re: Windows update
See this article and ignore the Title. Try Method 1 if not Method 2
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

It's not quite Patch Tuesday yet - depends upon time zone.

If that hasn't helped Bill, try posting to the WU Newsgroup stating your OS and what
you've already tried to avoid duplication.

Re: Windows update
Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried methods 1 and 2 as suggested by TaurArian and run the script
suggested by PaulM but on clicking on Microsoft Update I am still getting
the error message "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display
the page you are trying to views". If the past is anything if I were to get
any further, after selecting <Express> and the update file I would still go
into the eternal boot-up loop.

Any other possible solutions would be gratefully received.

You never, Never, NEVER install any hardware drivers presented by the
Windows Update site. If you feel compelled to install the latest driver
(which is usually without qualification if everything is working and you
already have full functionality of your hardware) then use the notice at
the WU of a new driver version as a prompt for you to go visit the
appropriate hardware vendor's web site to go get THEIR driver. The
drivers presented at the WU site are not always correctly listed for
your particular hardware, or they may a new version that is found to
have a defect but it takes weeks before the vendor can get Microsoft to
remove it from their WU list.

Re: Windows update
Please initiate a manual visit to Microsoft Update either from the link
on the Start Menu or from within Internet Explorer.
When the error comes up again, close the browser.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log by going to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
Scroll all the way to the bottom for the most recent entries
Copy and paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

Re: Windows update
Thanks Mow.

I did as you suggested and had another attempt to get into Microsoft Update
to produce a log I could send you. (Un)fortunately I got in OK and all the
updates were downloaded and installed OK. So, I don't need to copy the log
to you. I wish I knew why getting into Microsoft Update these last few days
has been so hit and miss but I am just glad it's been resolved. How did you
do that??

Regards.

YW, Bill.
MS gives us extraterrestrial powers yearly with our MVP Award <w>
Perhaps the servers were busy as SP3 is starting to be rolled out more.
Who knows ? As long as it works, that's all that matters.
