strange happenings
Several things happening here:
1) When shutting down, windows doesn't shutdown completely, instead I get
some sort of driver error.
2) suddenly, I no longer have sound, and the volume control icon is missing
from my task bar. It was there earlier, but not now. When I tried to click it
earlier, it said that there were no devices installed. I've changed nothing.

Tru opening event viewer & see whats going on,double click a event or
warning, get the info. Also, maybe create a new user account, open xp in new,
see how xp runs, delete old account if needed.

RE: strange happenings
I will try the new user. But I'm not sure what the event viewer is. Could you
explain more?

RE: strange happenings
Well I'm amazed! I logged on as a Guest User, and everything worked. Why the
difference, and how can I delete my current user without losing or recreating
everything under the new user?

P.S. I logged back onto my username and it didn't work.

Do not log on as Guest. Disable Guest. Instead, create a new user account
and see if everything works there. Permissions are different from Guest on
a new user account. If everything works in the new account, I would just
copy your data over from the old account and set up your email client (if
you're using one) under the new account rather than copying over settings
which may be corrupt.

To get to Event Viewer, Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

If you need more help, post back with any errors you see in Event Viewer and
also let us know if the new user account works correctly. Also, answering
The First Question of Troubleshooting may be helpful:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

RE: strange happenings
Thanks for the info. I'll try those things.

As far as the first question of troubleshooting: I have no clue what
changed. It worked when I went to bed and shut down, didn't when I got up in
the a.m.

I'm not sure why you're getting these errors. Here are few troubleshooting
suggestions:

1. Try a System Restore to when things worked.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier date"

If that works, you're done.

2. Do some scanning for malware:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

I don't think it's hardware since you don't have these issues with the Guest
account. But there's definitely something wrong with your system. I just
don't know what at this point.
