error: Windows\system32\config\system File Is Missing Or Corrupt

I have started the manual steps to recover registry as recommended here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us
but when I try to copy the SYSTEM file I get an error that says unable to
copy.

Shall I try to rename the SYSTEM file and continue with the rest of the
process as recommended?
