my defrag won't work

When I try to run the disk defragmenter, it completes the analyza but when
the defragmenter starts I get the message -

(C The connection to the defragmenter ingine has been lost. Restart
defragmentation.

I'm running XP home edition, please help.

try running the defrag from safe mode to prevent any unneeded processes from
interfering
