PC going off when windows start
Hi

I have this problem suddenly come up on a win xp pro machine which is
connected to a small business server 2003 domain. The pc goes off i.e. green
lights turns to orange on both the pc box and monitor soon after windows
logo comes up and windows starts loading. I have tried Safe Mode, Safe Mode
with Networking and also Last Known Good Configuration. Initially all these
allowed the windows to reboot to desktop but now even these options are not
working.

What could be the problem and what can I do from here?

Thanks

Regards

My initial thought is that the fan on the CPU is bad which causes the
CPU to overheat and shut down. Remove the side panel and watch the fan.
It should turn well and move air with ease. You can also used canned
air to blow out any dust that might be present. Allow the system to cool
for an hour. Reboot and blow canned air on the CPU as it boots. If you
get further in the process before it shuts down, then the fan is bad.

Mr. Dow gave you a good suggestion about the computer overheating. If
doing that troubleshooting doesn't help, you need to look to other
hardware components as the culprits. This is a hardware, not software
(Windows) issue.

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these
are just suggestions based on many years of being a professional
computer tech; suggestions based on what you've written. You should not
take my suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. Testing hardware failures
often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good parts. If
you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your
computer, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

RE: PC going off when windows start
I had this problem with a couple of older Dell Optiplex GX240s. In my case
Dell had a problem with resistors on some of their motherboards that were
overheating and then bulging. I know it's a long shot that yours is the same
issue but I'm putting it out there in case it helps.

Re: PC going off when windows start
HAHAHAHAA LOL

Q. Why are you writing in the third person?
A. Because I like to pretend that Elephant Boy Computers consists of more
than one person. It's affected, OK? Now you've made me cry.

Q. Why aren't there more questions and answers on this FAQ?
A. Because I got tired of making them up.

Re: PC going off when windows start
I would suggest you plug in another video card, could be the video signal
cutting off when Windows trying to init the drivers/card.
