event sounds missing

I have tested the sound card and it is fine and passes all tests. I have set
up windows XP to make event sounds for "you have mail, USB
connected/disconnected, and empty recycle bin. No matter how I configure it
and no matter how many times I test it, THOSE EVENT SOUND DO NOT WORK. They
did work, but stopped working a month or so ago? The speakers and dvd
player sound is perfect/

Any thoughts on this subject?

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab > Program events:
Select a program event for which a sound has been selected.

1- In the Sounds box do you see a sound file ('something'.wav)?
2- When you click the arrow, do you hear the sound?
