1. Usually a virus is the culprit for removing msconfig, regedit and etc.
2. Check to see if the MSCONFIG file is on your hard drive.
Click Start, click Run, type: %systemroot%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\
click OK.
Is misconfig.exe file located there?
If not, then to extract a new copy from the Windows CD:-
Open a command prompt window.
Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the following command:
(assuming D is your CD drive and C is where your Windows is installed)
EXPAND -R D:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES
This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.
Try launching MSCONFIG from Run command. If you still can't, then check this location in
the registry in case there is an error there:-
Click Start, click Run, type: regedit
Navigate to this key:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE
In the right pane, next to Default, it should show:
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe
Try launching MSCONFIG.exe again
