Restore Point feature inaccessible

Using Windows XP Pro.

First, I just changed out hard drives, using Western Digital program to
partion and copy all from old drive. Seemed to work okay. But I just noticed
that I can no longer access Restore Point feature. When I click on create a
restore point, I get the following:

An exception occurred while trying to run "shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
system.cpl,,4" (I think these commas are commas and not periods. It's a
little hard to tell from display here.)

Events display also shows Error messages having to do with Event 1000. I
checked at MS, but not much info there regarding Restore Feature.

I've no idea what's gone wrong and would appreciate any assistance.

I have a similar problem - my system restore will not work no matter what I

You need to post complete copies of Error Reports not snippets from
them.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements.

It is likely that your old restore points are unusable. Can you create
new ones? Are these new ones accessible?

I have the exact problem, I installed the WD-HD500 and used their
copy program, and how have the same issue. So far, I have not seen
anything to get it fixed, but I will continue to watch this post.

As for the event log, I just went into system Properties, clicked the System
restore TAB, get the RUNDLL error popup, and there is no error log generated
in the event log.

Well, Gerry, I didn't post a "snippet," but in fact, the error message that
popped up when I clicked on Restore Point in Properties Menu of My Computer.

I did check Event Viewer, obviously, as noted in my post. Yes, that was a
snippet. Here is the full message from Event Viewer (complete with no
exclamation points). Thank you for the tip on how to copy and paste out of
Event Viewer as I did not know about that.

Anti-virus is Anti-Vir. As for concern with any previous restore points, I'm
not in the least. I'm concerned only with being able to create new ones after
having complete install of new hard drive.

I hope this is satsifactory. It appears here that more than I are having
this problem after using WD hard-drive install/ghost program.

Ray,

I just posted reply to Gerry for his consideration. I was just posting a
reply to Bizman as well. Since you too used WD program to install a new hard
drive, contact them too, as I plan to do. They did get back to me pretty
quickly regarding another issue, so not bad support. I just thought to post
here first.

Research suggests that AntiVir will prevent the Automatic Creation of
System Restore points. You should disable AntiVir Guard and manually
create System Restore points after significant system changes and then
re-enable AntiVir Guard. The alternative is to change to an anti-virus
programme that does not interfere with System restore.

Sorry to be so late here, Gerry. (Two hard weeks) Thanks for reply. After 14
hours of messing with this thing that day, I finally turned off almost all
running services, including MS services not essential. After rebooting, I was
able to access both System Restore AND Backup utility (which also wasn't
working. Backup utility was stalling while looking for storage devices. I
have only a second internal hard drive). One service I didn't turn off was
AntiVir. (I didn't want to risk resident AV while still online.) Maybe that
would have worked too. I don't know.

I don't really know exactly how I fixed it after such a long day of trying
so many different things. Something to do with services running, apparently.
I've had problems since, of course, and so have been slowly turning back on
services--as necessary. So far, so good. I got a backup made in the meantime,
and created a Restore Point.

I'll bear in mind you comment re AntiVir. Thanks very much for getting back,
and again, sorry to be late here.

Ray,

If still there and having same problem I had, see my reply to Gerry. Try
turning off all but absolutely necessary services running. Reboot normally
and see if you can access System Restore. Turn off System Restore service
too, if necessary. I did, when I got mad and was ready to try anything! I
can't be sure that wasn't the solution.
