Can't defrag C: or EX HD
Hi too all:

When I attempt to defragment my C; or EX HD I get this message:
MMC cannot open the file C:\windows\system32\dfrg.msc

Can anyone shed some light on what I need to do.

Thanks, Vince

Re: Can't defrag C: or EX HD
1- Is that the complete text of the message? For example, does the
message go on to say this:

"This may be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."

[Always post the complete, exact text of error messages.]

2- Can you run Windows defragmenter from the command line?

(I do not believe Windows defragmenter will defragment an external hard
disk. For that you need third-party software.)

Leonard:

Yes it does say that & a bit more, do you need to know every bit?. I used
to right click on my c: & ex hd. icons in my computer & proceed to tools
then defrag/ and or check for errors. Always worked fine until today. I was
able to defrag manually in Run then type in dfragc: & defragf:.

Leonard:

The complete text is as follows:
MMC cannot open the fileC:\windows\system32\dfrag.msc
This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console or was
created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you don't
have sufficient access rights to the file.

What are the permissions on dfrag.msc? Does your account have permissions
which allow it to execute the file?

Gerry:

Thanks for the help. I tried your suggestion & providing I did the
loading procedure correctly, it didn't help at all. I'm not, however, sure I
installed it correctly. Are you sure it is #291 & not 280? Anyhow I rt.
click on #291 & "saved link as" to my C: drive. It then came up in
"Downloads". Then I click on "Open & "Open executible file' opens w/ all the
virus cobble-dee-gook. From there I'm scared $hitle$$ on what to do further.
HELP! Thanx again.

Re: Can't defrag C: or EX HD
If you have Windows XP Professional you can check your permissions for
the executable from the security tab. (Do this from an Administrator
account.) If you have XP Home you'll need to be in Safe Mode to see the
Security tab.

RE: Can't defrag C: or EX HD
I am having the exact same problem with the same message all the way down to
not having access rights. I have been using it on this computer for a year
and a half and the only thing I can think of is that I had downloaded the SP3
and had so much trouble with it that I uninstalled it. This is the first time
I had tried to use the defragmenter since then and wonder if there is a
connection.
