Reboot - try first thing after the reboot.

Re: disk defragmenter XP
Hi,
Thanks for your response;however, I tried the defrag immediately after
reboot as you suggested but did not help. XP does not have a defrag running
somewhere in the background, does it?

Re: disk defragmenter XP
Which way are you trying to run Disk Defragmenter? What actually happens
when you try? Have you been using a third party defragmenter? How much
free disk space is there in percentage terms on the partition you are
trying to defragment?

Try Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

If it still does not work try Start, Run, type "defrag c:" without the
quotes and click on OK. Do not overlook the colon after C! You will not
see evidence of progress using the command line version of Disk
Degragmenter, except for an analysis report fairly early on and then
just a flashing cursor until it completes. It may take some time.

Hope this helps.

Re: disk defragmenter XP
Wow! Thanks. I had done all those things you mentioned, i.e., empty trash
and run the error-check from the local disk (c)/properties/tools before I
tried defragment, also from local/tools. I also tried it from
proram/system/tools with no success. But the defrag c: fromthe command line
worked just great!
(I am leary of cleaning up restore points but might giver that a try later).

I am trying to get my system running faster so I hope the defrag helps ---
it sure took long enough! ..now I need to get rid of stuff at reboot.

Thanks again for your help.
