Must remove laptop battery to boot XP Pro SP3
At some unknown update point through the years, my beloved Fujitsu Lifebook P
Series started black-screen hanging on reboots. The only solution was to
remove all power and restart in Normal mode, which then worked.
Recently, to address this problem, I reformatted the drive and did a fresh
install of XP Pro SP2. It could reboot fine. Then I downloaded a bazillion
security updates and SP3, and now it hangs consistentnly on reboot again.
Unfortunately, this was done in bulk, so I can't say for certain which update
did it.
Any ideas where to go from here?
Thanks,
Bob

Are we supposed to know what you included in those "bazillion security
updates"?

If you started with SP2 you did not need to download a bazillion
updates. Applying SP3 to whatever you loaded from your CD would have
been sufficient. It should not have harmed anything, you just wasted
your time loading updates to SP2 that are in SP3 by default.
Doesn't help your problem but if you have to do this again, save
yourself the time.

RE: Must remove laptop battery to boot XP Pro SP3
Okaaay, point taken. Even though I downloaded all updates between SP2 and the
present (previously referred to as "a bazillion security updates") by default
with Windows Update, those included both the updates and the inclusive-SP3,
for a built-in redundancy. I get that. But the question remains: What, in
this flurry of recommended downloading, likely caused my computer to hang on
reboot, and what to do now?

Re: Must remove laptop battery to boot XP Pro SP3
Unless you can provide details that would help us diagnose the cause of
your problem. I suggest you show your computer to a professional.
On a guess: Does your computer have an AMD processor?

Re: Must remove laptop battery to boot XP Pro SP3
I can provide any details needed. And your processor guess was beyond good: I
have a Transmeta Crusoe processor, which is as non-standard as they come. Did
that likely become the culprit over the past 5 years?

Re: Must remove laptop battery to boot XP Pro SP3
Some OEMs image their PCs with Intel drivers even when non-Intel
processors are used. Hasn't made a difference - until SP 3 came along.
Contract your system vendor for help.
