opening with paint

opening with paint
can anyone help me out here? please!!!! I put my photo's in either documents
or pictures and try to open them with the paint program and it says this...
paint can not read this file. it is not a valid bitman file or it's format is
not currently supported. I do not know how to fix this problem, sure would
appreciate some help, Thanks

I'm thinking you have a problem with
your graphics filters:

The following articles are quite old but

Thanks John for your fast reply. I believe you found the problem. To fix this
there is a list a mile long and they say it's rather dangerous to fool with
it. So, I feel very stuck now. Paint did not support the pics....don't want
to do any damage to my p.c. as I am not computor literate. Any suggestions?
