ocr scanning on hp photosmart c4280
When trying to scan from hp solution center I get a message that cue-scanning
flow component has encountered a problem and is closing. Going to the image
zone and trying a scan there sends a photo and imaging gallery has
encountered a problem. I've been online and in email contact with HP tech
support. I've tried all their solutions including uninstalling and
reinstalling the software several times. I've tried stopping the cue and
hp... links in services. I've made sure that ocr software is installed.
I've updated the software and windows. I can scan a picture from a
specific exe from the hp software, but can not get the solution center to
work, nor can I get editable text.
Any ideas out there?

I just installed the hp photosmart c4280, and although I cant answer your
question, I was hoping to find information also. I use Microsoft Works Suite
2006 - the spreadsheet - and when i go to print with the new printer the
program "encountered a problem and has to close". Anyone have a similar
problem? How do I resolve this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Same problem? When I use the HP Solution Center, and click "Scan a
Document", I get an error window that says
"HP-CUE" needs to close. When I click the "details" link, it says
hpqkygrp.exe caused the problem when it called
msvcr80.dll. Removing and reinstalling the HP software 6 times, and
finally rebuilding XP, still didn't help.
I used Google to research "msvcr80.dll" problems, and noticed some
similarities ... it is used by other
photo/imaging applications. Here is what I discovered that fixed my HP
Scanner problems.
1- Removed the entire HP suite; C6280 drivers and all related HP
programs
2- Removed Kodak photo programs
3- Removed Adobe Photoshop
(you may have to remove photo/imaging applications from other vendors,
these are the only 2 I had loaded here)
4- Installed the HP C6280 suite
(more of the solution follows)
It now works perfectly. But once the HP software is installed, I
couldn't reinstall either Kodak or Adobe photo
software. Both use InstallShield and their installation would hang;
Process Explorer (MS SystemInternals) showed
that "ntvdm.dll" was hung(a subprocess of the installation). To fix
this problem I found I had to temporarily stop
the Services that HP starts.
5- Go into "Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services"
6- Stop "HP Cue DeviceDiscovery" service
7- Stop "HP Network Devices Support" service
8- Stop "hpqcsx08" service
9- Installed Kodak and Photoshop
10- Restarted the above HP services
They have all been working for a week now (HP, Kodak, Adobe).
This problem first showed up in HP's support forums in 2005, regarding
Kodak photo imaging software, and HP's
solution was you should their competitor's software.

Re: ocr scanning on hp photosmart c4280
Thanks for the information. My computor just started messing up and I love
the computor but don't have much background in computoreeze to understand the
problem, much less the solution. I tried to install a new printer and have
had nothing but "fatal errors" all week and this was just one more thing to
top off all the others.! Sooooo, at least one problem got solved. Kitty

HP CUE Scanner error
OK, I FINALLY FOUND THE PROBLEM AND THE FIX. Thanks to bwt777 for suggesting it was a registry
cleaner issue. It was, and I found a work around. The problem is HP is creating an invalid
registry entry, but if you remove it, as your registry cleaner will, the HP CUE software
crashes. HP now has this same fix information, but it'll probably be 6 months before they
release a fix (if ever).
If you want the fix, read the very end. The beginning here documents the problem.
HP Scanner Software Problem
CIRCUMSTANCES to cause error:
Run HP Solution Center
Click on Scan Document or Scan Picture
Error window pops up; scan software aborts
ERROR MESSAGE:
HP CUE Scanning Flow Component has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for
the inconvenience.
CAUSE:
HP software installation creates a bad registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging
Key = ProfileWritePath
Value = %APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
This value is in error; it indicates the HP CUE profile is written in the USERs application data
path. The registry variable %APPDATA% typically resolves to
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data
Therefore, the installation software says the HP CUE profile can be found in
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
However, the actual path where the HP CUE profile is being written is:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
In other words, the HP CUE profile is not being written to the %APPDATA% path, but is instead
being written to the
%ALLUSERSPROFILE% path.
The HP software works as installed, until the user runs a Registry Cleaner program. Registry
cleaner programs detect that the path specified by HP is an Invalid Path and removes the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging\ProfileWritePath
If this key is missing from your registry, this is your problem.
When this key is deleted from the registry, scanning fails and the HP CUE error message occurs.
Replacing the key allows scanning to work again.
The bad Key Value created by HP cannot be corrected by the user. If you change the erroneous
value, to a valid path, the scanner fails and the same HP CUE error message occurs:
- You cannot replace %APPDATA%
with %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data
- You cannot replace %APPDATA%
with C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
Any changes to correct the erroneous value apparently cause HP CUE to blow up.
WORK AROUND:
Since you cannot fix the HP software bug, you must fool the Registry Cleaner so that it does not
remove this invalid HP registry entry.
First, you must recreate the original HP registry entry if it is missing. In the registry:
- go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hewlett-Packard\DigitalImaging
- create a new key (String Value); name it ProfileWritePath
- set the value of this new key to
%APPDATA%\HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
For each user who will logon to the computer, you must go their personal Application Data
directory, and create the HP CUE sub-directories that are missing; the registry cleaner will
then see that the HP registry entry is pointing to a valid path, and not remove the HP registry
entry.
For example, you must create this folder path for each user of the computer:
C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\
HP\Digital Imaging\Data\Destination
You don't need to add any files to the end directory, it can be left empty.

Re: HP CUE Scanner error
HI,
I have been getting the cue scanner error message since i reinstalled
my HP Photosmart C7280 software. I get the message every few minutes,
regardless of whether or not I use the scanner.
I tried to follow your advice, but I am a computer novice, and i have
no idea how to do the first step, i.e., recreating the original HP
registry entry. how do i get to the correct place to do this, and how
do I create a new key? If you could walk me through it in baby-steps, I
would be SO appreciative.
thanks so much!
