XP PRO USB PRINTING SERVICE
We recently installed a Lexmark e232 laser. The installation failed with the
message "unknown usb device". We called Lexmark and it was determined that
the usb print service had been uninstalled - it does not show up in device
manager under the usb items. We also have a network printer installed via
the LAN. When we check properties for it under ports this computer no longer
has the ability to assign a usb or virtual port (they don't show up in the
options list. The motherboard is a new Intel board without an onboard
parallel port. How do we reinstall the windows XP usb print service?

Thanks

Re: XP PRO USB PRINTING SERVICE
I've tried this by booting from the XP cd - install windows - and using the
repair option. I've also ran SFC /scannow from the command prompt. Nothing
has helped. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Re: XP PRO USB PRINTING SERVICE
Well the last option is a format and clean install - unfortunately.

Did you try uninstalling the USB hubs in Device Manager and then rebooting
the PC? XP should automatically redetect and reinstall them. Are other USB
devices working OK?

Re: XP PRO USB PRINTING SERVICE
Yes - uninstalled all usb devices and then rebooted. XP redetected them but
still not usb prnting service. USB wireless keyboard and mouse are working
fine. Lexmark says we are missing usbprint.sys in the registry and
downloaded a patch but when we run it an error says cannot access the
registry. They say that the system is missing the registry entries necessary
for usb printing. They were ther until we ran the Lexmark driver install
program but Lexmark says it is now a Microsoft problem.

A clean install would be a major problem because of all of the other
software installed on the computer

Thanks

Re: XP PRO USB PRINTING SERVICE
You must be an Administrator to change the Registry so ensure you are logged
on when you try to use the patch. If it's a simple zip file, unzip it, if
you have a file inside that has a *.reg extension, AND you are the
Administrator, you can right click on the file and select MERGE.

Of course you should not be doing this if you are uncertain of the patch's
origin.
