FTP problem

I recently bought a new computer that has XP Professional as its OS.
In the past, with XP home, I've used a Firefox plug-in called Fire FTP
with no difficulty. It will not make a connection with an FTP server
on my new computer. Neither will Smart FTP, a stand-alone program I
downloaded.

Could somebody tell me how to solve the problem? I need my FTP.

What happens when you try? If you get error messages, please quote the exact
text. What antivirus/security program(s) are you using? Perhaps third-party
firewall adjustment is necessary.

There is no difference between XP Home and Pro in the way an FTP program
functions so the problem is with something you've installed on your
computer and/or its settings.

On this New Machine, did you Entered the right login credentials such as:
Host Server: ftp.yourdomain.com
Username: YouruserID12567
Password: the password been give to you or you set it up.
Click New Remote Browser

Protocol: Normal FTP
Host: ftp.mydoamin.com
Path:
Login type: Login/Password
Username: Your <case sensitive>
Password: Password <case sensitive>
Check the Firewall not Blocking port 21 on your machine, try to set to ask
before connect!.

I gritted my teeth and turned off the Windows firewall and Fire Ftp
connected without difficulty. It's kind of scary to leave it off,
however. Do you have a suggestion? Is it possible to fix the firewall
so it lets FTP through?

You should not turn off your firewall. As nass said in his reply to you,
make sure the Firewall isn't blocking the correct port. You can also set
the FTP program in the Firewall as an exception. You didn't mention what
antivirus/security programs you have installed. Make sure that whatever you
are using doesn't also have a firewall component (many of them do) because
you only want one firewall active.

Many thanks to everybody. I finally found out that the factory
installed something called Symantec Client Security. When I removed
that, my FTP worked fine. Life is good, thanks to you all.

Ah yes, the old "I'm really running two firewalls and didn't realize it"
