Windows XP Home Upgrade to XP Pro acting weird
I upgraded a Windows XP Home SP2 with a Win XP Pro SP 2 CD and it did not
complain about anything. However, besides running slow, here are some of the
things I now notice do not seem right and I don't understand it...sort of
1. HOME had IE 7, it is no longer there and I have now an IE 6 that acts
really strange. If I click on Windows Catalog or Windows Update, it opens
two browser windows and one remains blank. The other ones starts flickering
and eventually , it may display something.
2. Windows Update works, but it wont install anything. I followed a
troubleshooting tip and found the Windows Update folder empty under
c:\program files. The tip didn't tell me anything else after that...there
were no files in that folder.
The installation was activated.
The hard drive was defragged.
So, I know I cannot uninstall and go back to XP Home which ran fantastic (I
upgraded because my daughter needed Pro to run some programs that require
it). I don't know what to try and afraid to do anything in case I find a way
to revert to HOME. Prior to installation, I did not do was uninstall the
Antivirus or the firewall. I disabled to Symantec firewall for 4 hrs is all
I did. I did not know that this was suggested before the upgrade. I hope
a MVP can guide on how to correct the situation. It was a pretty fast
machine ..... and I had to tell my daughter not to install anything in it
yet...

Re: Windows XP Home Upgrade to XP Pro acting weird
Shenan, you are the man. I did a bit more than what your tip pointed me to,
but it took me to the right place. I now have a screaming Windows XP PRO SP2
workstation and seems to be running happy. Thank you for helping me and
everyone. Have a good year.
