SP2 Install Freezes during Product ID check
I have a new install of XP on a Toshiba Laptop. I have done the updates from
the microsoft update website, and installed everything fine up until SP2.
The Lisence is a good volume license from the company I work for so it should
not be having an issue with that. Specifically here are the steps I took.

Formatted HD
Installed XP with SP1
installed Wireless drivers
Installed Updates from microsoft update (67 in total)
Installed Toshiba Drivers
Tried to install SP2

Should I have installed sp2 BEFORE the toshiba drivers? I am stuck here and
could really use a hand.

Re: SP2 Install Freezes during Product ID check
SP2 should have been the first step after installing XP, it includes all SP1
updates.

Re: SP2 Install Freezes during Product ID check
But the automatic update feature of Windows didn't pick it up until after I
had installed all the toshiba drivers. Then it told me to install SP2. So I
tried and now here I am stuck. I can download it and try installling it
before all the toshiba drivers, but i'm not confident that will make much
difference.

Download the "IT Version" and install it.
Truthfully - the IT version is just everything you need in a tidy single
package.

As for the way it was not offered - that means very little. I would have -
in fact - recommended that you get the "IT Version" before you started the
process and integrated it into the Windows XP media you have before starting
so you had SP2 installed from the start.

In case you need it: -

SP2 installation hangs at "Checking product key" phase
Posted by another user who got a response from MS Support:-

There are 3 steps which we have to do to get the SP2 installed.

Steps are:

1) Please go into the CMD prompt (Start/Run --> cmd.exe )

2) Then type cd /d %windir%\inf and make sure we are in that directory.

3) Then type ren oem*.inf oem*.old, it will go back to the prompt after giving you some
error (Do not worry about it)

4) Then type ren oem*.pnf oem*.old1, it will go back to the prompt after giving you some
error (Do not worry about it)

5) Then goto start - run - type "%windir%\inf" and you will see the files in the folder.

6) Then find the file by name INFCACHE.1 and take a backup of it to desktop (by copying it
to desktop) and delete the INFCACHE.1 from c:\windows\inf.

7) Close all windows and reboot the computer to safe mode and start the installation of
SP2 and it should go fine.
