Dvd Not recognized

Not sure if I am posting this in the right place but here we go, after
installing WinAVI video converter my windows software does not recognize
DVD's, in order to play or use DVD's I have to use WinAVI. I would like to be
able to use both programs from time to time is there away to do this?
