Saving DVD to hard drive but want to save space
x-no-archive:
I have a DVD that I've managed to save to my hard drive. But
obviously I don't need the same quality as for my TV so to save space
I thought I would convert it to another format (mpeg, avi, wmv?) and
smaller size.

Can someone suggest a format that would still be a decent quality
picture and sound on my computer?

Download windows encoder 9 series,in the encoder select convert audio/video
choose the quality type on next page. Also, get the encoder utilities.

thanks but I'm using Ulead's videoStudio. IT gives me all kinds of
options. I'm just looking for the one that isn't overkill (ie no
point in saving the DVD to my hard drive as is). So is avi best?
Mpeg? WMV?

I used Ulead VideoStudio (before it stopped working - don't know why)

Anyway, I do know that avi is NOT the smallest. It is the best quality and
largest in storage. MPEG uses less space and the quality is OK I convert my
wife's videos to MPEG before she puts them onto YouTube - they upload more
quickly and they look just as good. I am not sure where wmv comes in the
space/quality scale

WMV can be as good as others. It's probably comparable to MPEG. Possibly not
as good, but it now goes up to 3.0Mbps in Movie Maker on Vista. Whatever the
quality, it will always be the smallest file size.
