Codec for XP to play dvd made on Vista Ultimate

I have a laptop (Windows Vista Ultimate) with DVD burner. Windows Media
Player is Version 11.0.6000).

I have a desktop (Windows XP Pro – SP2) no DVD burner, but DVD player and
CD burner. This computer has Windows Media Player 10. (I have not upgraded
the Media Player because doing so would make me unable to use ActiveSync to
sync with my PDA.)

I have found that if I use the laptop and create a movie in Windows Movie
Maker, I can play it on the laptop but NOT on the desktop.

I downloaded and ran Windows XP Video Decoder as I was told by Dell that I
should be able to play my DVD on the XP machine. If I could not they said it
had something to do with not having codecs. According to that utility I have
Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder Version 3.5.1.103. In the column “MCE Compatible”
there is a red circle with a white “x” which I assume means it is not MCE
compatible – I think MCE means Media Center Edition.

When I clicked on “Check for Updates”, I was taken to

I am inclined to think that I should opt for the one on the right “Power
Pack: PowerDVD SE + MP3 encoder. I am simply stumbling around here, but if
anyone could give me any further light or assurance on this, I would welcome
it.

This is an update to the above. I did find that I had the install for
PowerDVD so I uninstalled that and reinstalled it but it did not solve the
problem. If I put in a DVD that I have made on the Vista machine the computer
does not even recognize that there is a DVD in the drive.

Also I went to Control Panel/Hardware and when I clicked on Video codecs in
the troubleshooting section all of the questions asked related to audio -
"Can you hear when...." This puzzled me. I went to check under Audio codecs
and it was exactly the same set of questions, nothing about seeing.

Another update to my efforts:

I thought I would try bringing the .mpeg video file into Movie Maker on XP
to try to make a project in that and hope that I could save it and burn it on
Vista. When I tried to bring the .mpeg file into WMM I got this message:
F:\DVD_NameNTSC1247-108180.mpg could not be imported. An interface has too
many methods to fire events from.

Does this tell anyone anything? Is anybody out there???
