problems with dvd rom

I am able to play music cds in my DVD rom, but cannot with movies. It will
not recognize the disk, any suggestions. Oh I have tried to install updated
decoders and drivers and this does not work. My computer is a Windoxs XP.

Have you tried the following free software:

VLC media player
http://www.videolan.org/
