RDP from behind a firewall and host side of firewall

When i remote in across the LAN, I can use either IP address or hostname.
but when I remote in from home, I can only use the IP address, which is
anoying as the IP address expires after 24 hours and I often forget to check
the new one before leaving the office. is there a reason for this and is
there a way around it without changing the time of the IP lease?

You would need to setup a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) that is mapped
to the dynamic IP your office router is being assigned by the ISP. Your
network administrators can do that or may have done that already. Check with
them. Once that is setup you simply call the office using the FQDN.
Presuming that TCP Port 3389 is open on the router and forwarded to your
office desktop you could then connect using Remote Desktop.

For home users I always recommend a free service like No-IP.com to do this.
