Ok, if you can get the DSL modem/router into a bridge/pass through mode or
figure out how to open TCP Port 3389 it should work. In the former case your
Dad's PC would get a public IP from his ISP. You could call using that. In
the latter case he gets a private IP from the DSL modem/routers built-in
DHCP server. In order to do port forwarding it would be best if he
configured his PC for a static IP. You would still call using the pubic IP
of the DSL modem/router.

You also might consider using an alternative program to access his PC for
your help desk function. I use and recommend TeamViewer. I have found it
faster in response than Remote Assistance. TeamViewer is *FREE* for personal
use. The nice thing about TeamViewer is if you use their third-party
connection server you don't need to worry about firewall and router ports
being open which may be a big plus for you and your Dad.
