Offer Remote Assistance
I am trying to remotely help my Dad with his PC. In the past when he was on
dialup I was able to connect to his PC by going to Start->Help and
support->Offer Remote Assistance. In the ORA window I would enter my Dad's
current IP address, he would accept my offer and I was in.

But now he has DSL and the DSL modem is also a router. So his IP address on
his private side of the router maybe something like 10.10.10.118 and on the
public side his IP maybe 198.192.10.111. I tried entering either the private
or public IP address, but my Dad never receives my offer.

Is there a way to enter both the public and private IP addresses so there is
a full route to my Dads PC? Or is there a way to hack the ORA html form to
insert a full proper route?

Thanks.....

Re: Offer Remote Assistance
You would need to either open TCP Port 3389 in the DSL modem/router or put
into a bridge/pass through mode of operation so it does not act as a router.
Check the DSL modem/router users manual or check with the ISP for help with
that. Is your Dad's PC also behind another router besides the DSL
modem/router device?

Re: Offer Remote Assistance
Ok, if you can get the DSL modem/router into a bridge/pass through mode or
figure out how to open TCP Port 3389 it should work. In the former case your
Dad's PC would get a public IP from his ISP. You could call using that. In
the latter case he gets a private IP from the DSL modem/routers built-in
DHCP server. In order to do port forwarding it would be best if he
configured his PC for a static IP. You would still call using the pubic IP
of the DSL modem/router.

Help setting a static IP address...

You also might consider using an alternative program to access his PC for
your help desk function. I use and recommend TeamViewer. I have found it
faster in response than Remote Assistance. TeamViewer is *FREE* for personal
use. The nice thing about TeamViewer is if you use their third-party
connection server you don't need to worry about firewall and router ports
being open which may be a big plus for you and your Dad.
