"access denied" offline file sync error

I have a drive that maps to a domain server which I would like to be
able to sync to. My laptop is not and cannot be part of the domain,
however, I can access the folders and files properly while online.
Syncing files to the laptop works fine, but when I go off line, edit a
file, and try to sync back to the share on the server, the network
file actually gets DELETED but sync gives me an "access denied" error
and won't copy the off line version of the file to the network. I can
copy files just fine manually, and the reading I've done leads me to
believe the issue is that the transfer fails because the laptop
account is a local account and so does not "own" the files. I don't
have admin on the server but I have full control on my own folders on
the server. Any ideas for how to make this work?
