remotedestop takes forever to load

I use remote desktop from home to connect to my computer at work. Everything
works great, but it takes about 5 min for the remote desktop sign in screen
to appear for the first time. This is after I have made a VPN connection
between my home computer (XP home edition) and my work computer (XP
professional). my home computer is froze until the remote desktop screen
appears. is this typical or do I have a setting wrong?

This could be the MTU issue. These posts may help.
Can't RDP to a server because MTU
MTU size that be transmitted. You can enable PMTU Black Hole Detection
on the Windows-based hosts that will be communicating over a WAN connection.
