If your trying to access the XP machine from a Vista machine you either need
to login with Remote Desktop [RDC] using an existing account on the XP
machine or add a user on the XP machine with the same user ID and password
as your Vista machine in the control panel - user account function.

If the user is an admin account your good to go. If the user is a limited
user account you add them to the Remote Desktop Users Group. Click the
"Select Remote Users" button.

All RDC access is using accounts local to the XP machine.
Likewise if your wanting to access the Vista machine with RDC from the XP
machine.
